The Roter Stein may be somewhat hidden, but it is still a much-visited classic. This is understandable, as it starts quite steeply almost directly from the parking lot and offers interesting terrain almost all the way to the summit. Only the last few meters have to be covered on foot...
Ascent
From the parking lot, first head south into the Stockachtal valley. You soon reach a wide and steep mountain pine slope, over which you continue to ascend. When the terrain becomes flatter again, turn west and cross below the steep north side of the Schafsköpfl into the cirque below the Roter Stein. As the terrain becomes steeper again, you ascend in the cirque to the summit structure with skins, the last few meters must then be covered on foot, often depositing the skis.
Descent
Similar to the ascent. The descent from the summit is possible, but steep and exposed, and usually not very rewarding.
Alternative
From the summit you can ski the steep eastern gully (possibly worthwhile in firn), with a short ascent to the north you reach a saddle from which you can ski back down to the ascent route.

How to get there: From the Fernpassstrasse at Bichlbach take the exit towards Berwang, after about 2km turn left towards Bichlbächle. Park after a left-hand bend by a bridge, parking spaces are often scarce.
