Snow for the Wild East

When Ullr orders a Melange and a snowfall for five euros for the bus driver at the tobacconist, you know that it will only snow in the east of Austria.

Areas & period:

This alert therefore extends from Salzburger Land to the peaks of Lower Austria, whereby the core should really be in the far east. The whole thing will fall until Thursday night, so that the full amounts will be reached on Thursday morning.

Wind:

The wind will not only blow a little, but will storm massively, so that everything above the tree line will be massively transported and dangerous, and there will probably be little joy at the top due to the lack of a base. So read the LLBs and: the meadows below the tree line are calling!

Snow line and amounts:

The snow line will also remain alpine meadow-friendly and will probably be quite low in places. Above 800-1000m, the full amounts will come.

From Salzburgerland eastwards, 20-40cm will fall across the board and at least provide a wintry impression. In the eastern northern part of Styria and Lower Austria, it could be 50-60cm or even 70cm in some places, according to local models. Especially as the models in this area usually underestimate the orography somewhat, in contrast to the permanent overestimation on Mont Blanc or Monte Rosa in the western Alps.

Where should I go?

First of all: If you're not a local or you're in the area anyway, I wouldn't necessarily take the long journey, as it's stormy and there's no base. However, if you're on vacation nearby, it might be worth driving 100km to the east and tackling a few grass tours on Thursday. You can possibly get into the trees in the two deepest ski areas on Thursday. On Wednesday and everywhere else and at any time, that would be quite ski and self-destructive.

Mid-term:

January 2 no longer looks so tempting as an important date and whether there will really be a changeover then is questionable, but the WeatherBlog can certainly find out better. However, some model runs still have the power of Ullr in them, so keep your fingers crossed and sacrifice at the Ullr shrine.
