PG final meeting 2021 | More than a video conference

Thank you for the numerous participation, it was an honor for us!

by PowderGuide 04/21/2021
The annual PowderGuide final meeting took place last week, for the first time as a digital event. The initial skepticism about the virtual format was quickly dispelled, especially thanks to the lively participation of the participants. We were delighted to see so many familiar faces!

As it was unfortunately not possible this year to spend a weekend together in the mountains as usual, but the end of the season still wants to be celebrated, the PG team and the participating community can now add "experience with the conference software Wonder.me" to their CVs. Unlike Zoom and MS Teams, Wonder is designed more for small group discussions. Presentations are possible for everyone, but you can also, as in so-called real life, walk around a room "and then only hear and see people who are in the vicinity. This allowed the PG team to say a few "official" thank-you notes and season summaries, but above all we were all able to catch up with each other again, at least virtually. After the very special winter of 2020/21, there was plenty to talk about!

The introductory remarks about the course of the season at PowderGuide.com and the new CR were interspersed with a few minor technical teething troubles, so as not to get boring. Afterwards, everyone spread out into different "circles" - it was more or less time for the cozy part of the evening. As is so often the case, this also solved the technical problems. In addition to the "Bar Circle" and the "Sofa Circle", there was an opportunity to talk to CR representatives Lukas and German about the ConditionsReport, discuss the finer points of winter sports cinematography with Sebastian (Videos of the Week), chat with Steffi (SnowFlurry), Lars (PowderAlert) and Lea (WeatherBlog) at the "Snow and Weather Table" and have a virtual toast with the rest of the PG team and, of course, the other participants. We hope the missing packages arrive soon and you find someone else to toast with!

With over 50 participants, this special final meeting was also the most well-attended in PG history. And on its 20th anniversary too! For the first time, some PG partners were also at the table and there were lively discussions about the future of winter, skiing in Corona times, new financing models for PowderGuide.com and all kinds of non-technical topics - including Swiss dialect. All in all, it was a very successful evening and we are happy to be able to conclude this special winter season with the PG community in this way.

Impressions from the theme tables, mustard from the team:

Steffen (Sales & Marketing, Gear of the Week, PG branch CH)

The final online meeting yesterday was a real success. I was a little skeptical whether people weren't just tired of all the video conferencing stuff and whether the format would be so well received, especially by people who prefer to be outside. But the access figures (peak 55 out of 60 registrations) speak for themselves. It's not just the peak that's interesting, I was much more pleased with how long people were there, in what numbers and how committed they were. A piece of PowderGuide normality in your own four walls!

Totti (Sales & Marketing, Administrative, PG-Headquarter D)

The format of Wonder.me is really funny with such a large number of participants. We also didn't know whether it would develop as planned, as we deliberately wanted to avoid a lot of frontal presentations and promote a collaborative exchange. All in all, I thought it was a great success, as in addition to many constructive discussions, the focus was once again on small talk and chatting at the bar. That's exactly what we've all been missing out on for a good year now. Unfortunately, the evening was over far too quickly to have exchanged a few words with all the familiar faces! I could well imagine that - despite a hopefully soon return to normality - we could organize a similar format once or twice a season in the future. But I'm even more looking forward to a proper toast next winter! At which the PG beer glass will also clink!!!

Lea (WeatherBlog, Editorial Director)

At the snow and weather table, snow and weather were of course recurring topics, but there was also a lot about the special features of the Corona winter. Some got to know the mountains in the surrounding area better or rediscovered them, others are fitter than ever due to the lack of lifts. Hardly anyone complained about the snow, apart from the annoying old snow problem that still lingers here and there. Whether it's the Black Forest, Switzerland, Chamonix, Tyrol or the eastern edge of the Alps, everyone has noticed that the number of ski tourers is increasing, the amount of snow is decreasing, especially in the lower regions, and the weather is somehow getting stranger. And if you don't get up early, you'll soon run out of parking spaces for your e-bike!

Lukas (ConditionsReport)

It was great to see the ConditionsReporters, even if only virtually. Thanks to the new ConditionsReport including the app, the focus at the ConditionsReport table was on content, but socializing was not neglected either. Many ConditionsReporters expressed their delight that their long-standing wish for an app had been fulfilled this season. Alex, the project manager for the new ConditionsReport from the PG team, was also delighted with the generally positive feedback. However, we then quickly moved on to the details of the content. The lively exchange with the ConditionsReporters on improvements and further developments of the ConditionsReport has a long tradition and suggestions for improvement were also quickly found virtually, which the PG team gratefully accepted. The ConditionsReporter team is also very much looking forward to being out in the snow again and toasting the season together!

We think the virtual meeting was a complete success, but of course we still hope that the first time was the last time and that we can meet up again in person next spring!
