At the beginning of February, from 03.02.2023 to 05.02.2023, Silvretta Montafon will be hosting the freeride event with the illustrious name "Powderfest" for the third time. The freeride station offers a comprehensive and varied program from Friday to Sunday: As part of various workshops, ski tests and guided tours, everyone goes in search of the best lines and the most beautiful powder in the Silvretta Montafon!

Group size & costs

The group size for the various workshops is between 3 and 7 people. Participation in the Safety Academy courses is free of charge, the costs for the other courses are €40 or €80 depending on the scope/duration.

Ortovox Safety Academy

At the "Ortovox Safety Academy", participants can take part in basic or advanced courses on safety and risk management in freeriding, depending on their previous knowledge. In the basic courses, Ortovox pro Michi Mautz teaches the basics of correct behavior in an emergency and how to use emergency equipment. The advanced course focuses on the advanced functions of the avalanche transceiver (marking function, group check) and practising multiple avalanche searches.

Supporting program in detail

In addition to a basic course, two Freeride Days courses for skiers and snowboarders will take place on Friday (03.02.2023). The evening program this year includes the Powderfest Opening for the first time, which will focus on discussions and inspiring stories about sustainability. The topic will be highlighted together with Protect Our Winters Austria and Silvretta Montafon.

Saturday (04.02.2023) then has a very extensive program to offer. Skis from Head, Nordica, Kästle and Atomic will be available for testing. In addition to technique training for freeriders, there will be a hike to the best lines in the area (Hike n' Ride), an introduction to splitboarding and a safety course for advanced skiers. Young people won't miss out either: in addition to freeride coaching for teenagers, they can also improve their freestyle skills in another special workshop.

The highlight of Saturday will then take place from 1 pm: The premiere of the Powderfest Backcountry Champions. First, 50 vertical meters have to be covered in the ascent, followed by a freeride descent and finally an avalanche transceiver search. In addition to the overall time, the style classification also counts, where you can secure a time credit with tricks on the descent or a disguise. In addition to the best time, there are also other categories in which victory can be claimed: For the best trick, the best disguise and the best crash. The focus is on having fun! Afterwards, the winners of the Backcountry Champion will be crowned and an après-ski party with live music will take place at the valley station of the Valisera cable car.

On Sunday (05.02.2023), ski tourers and splitboarders can explore the area with skin support and muscle power. Test skis from Head, Nordica, Kästle and Atomic will also be available again. There will be a workshop for beginners where they can learn the first steps of a skin-assisted descent. Finally, there will be a basic course from the Safety Academy.
