OMG - It's the Back on Track Feel Free Ride Contest

by Hanna Finkel 04/10/2018
Marc Obrist
From 23 - 25.03.2018, the snow-covered playground of the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe was once again the setting for a fantastic freeride spectacle. For the 6th time, 35 snow-hungry skiers, snowboarders and telemark skiers gathered at the Saarbrücker Hütte to celebrate the Back on Track Feel Free Ride Contest 2018. OMG stands for "Oh My God" and describes the BOT 2018 pretty well, but still doesn't quite do the experience justice!

Coming Home for BOT 2018

Every time, the ascent with the Vermuntbahn and the subsequent tunnel bus ride to the Vermuntstausee feels like coming home. No wonder, you meet old acquaintances and friends at the BOT every year. The majority of the contest participants are loyal "repeat offenders" who have been with us since the beginning of Back on Track and appreciate the contest format, the impeccable organization, the relaxed atmosphere and the indescribable freeride opportunities around the Saarbrücker Hütte. These same BOT veterans know the secret of a fast internet connection when it comes to securing one of the coveted starting places for this freeride event. Once again this year, all starting places, including the waiting list, were snapped up in no time at all.

On air on contest day

Like last year, the Winterberg was chosen as the contest slope. The rocky terrain opposite the Litzner Sattel set almost no limits to the creativity and playfulness of the riders. The professional mountain guides from the Montafon Alpine School and the Partenen mountain rescue team secured the terrain perfectly, spurring the athletes on to top performances. They in turn delivered a firework display of spectacular turns, radical lines, high jumps and stylish tricks on one and two boards in front of the camera. The high-fives were flying behind the finish line and the cheers only reached their climax in the evening at the joint riders' judging at the hut.

In the women's competition, Hanna Finkel beat off the competition with a playful line. Thomas Osterrieder dominated the men's snowboard with a fluid and rocky descent on his board. Matthias Kurzthaler literally flew over the skiing competition with spectacular cliff drops and a radical riding style. However, the incomparable atmosphere that prevailed during the three days could not be topped! "The happiness, the adrenaline, the passion - it's incredible. (...) This is simply "family"!", says Samuel Schuler, one of the four organizers, summing up.

Back on Track means disco for the feet

But the Back on Track Feel Free Ride Contest is far from over after the finish line. Basically, it's about much more than the competition. Mountains, snow and camaraderie are the ingredients that give you goosebumps in your ski boots at the BOT. The competition seems to be just a side issue. However, it is the annual reason for all participants to grab their skis and make the pilgrimage to the Montafon. In search of that tingling sensation with every turn. Ride. Feel. Free. Just like that.

The most important thing at the end: THANK YOU

A big thank you goes out to the supporters, helpers and sponsors of the BOT, including INTERSPORT Schruns-Bürs-Rankweil-Dornbirn, Arc'teryx, black crows, Jones Snowboard, Silvretta-Montafon Tourismus, contour, Raiffeisenbank Bludenz-Montafon, SP, Pieps, the mountain guides Lukas Kühlechner and Gerold Dünser from the Montafon Alpine School and the helpers from the Partenen mountain rescue service as well as the Saarbrücken hut team led by Stefan Schöpf.

And not to forget: Without the indescribable commitment and boundless passion of the four organizers Raphael Öttl, Andreas Portenschlager, Bernhard Fink and Samuel Schuler, an event of this extra class would not be possible. Keep going, you guys are awesome! Chapeau.
