Noteworthy products from our partner companies

by Steffen Kruse 03/25/2018
As a kind of afterthought to ISPO, which has now been over for a while, we would like to highlight a few highlights that our partner companies emphasized at the trade fair.

Penguin Parka - The jacket to extend

The Swiss manufacturer continues to use its high-quality Dermizax membrane and can absolutely hold its own against GoreTex and the like. The new 3-layer line was explicitly developed for wild days in the powder and is therefore not only stylish, but above all robust and waterproof. It is still breathable so that you stay dry when you're on the move and the wide cut gives you room for ideas. We are already looking forward to testing the jacket extensively.

In addition, the jacket can be extended into a parka for certain colors. Johannes from our team has already had a look at it at the trade fair, here's his impression and pictures.

Arc'teryx Procline AR - More descent, just as much ascent

The Canadians from Arc'teryx have further developed their ascent-oriented Procline ski touring boot, so that a little more downhill suitability has been added. The new Procline AR offers the same agility on the ascent as its predecessor, the Procline Carbon. You could almost say that the boot has grown up. While it was previously a boot that was great for ascents, it is now a sporty version that is at least as good for descents.

Arcteryx says this boot is absolutely balanced, meaning 50% ascent and 50% descent performance. The main new features are the "gaiter" at the entrance, the wide powerstrap, and the extended "beak", which now makes the boot compatible with most common crampons.

In addition, the shaft is a little higher, the stiffness higher, but the shaft rotation a little lower. The shell has been thinned a little, which has resulted in a little more space, especially in the forefoot area (previously around 90mm, now more like a 100mm last). There is a men's and women's version of this boot.

Dynafit Hoji Pro Tour - downhill-oriented touring ski boot from the ascent specialists

The ascent specialists at Dynafit have a strong downhill specialist under contract in Eric Hjorleifson, who also enjoys tinkering. He used to take apart the first downhill-oriented touring boots from Dynafit in his own workshop and reassemble them to suit his requirements. Now he has a whole team of product developers and can concentrate on skiing again.

Three years of development work went into producing a lightweight, functional, downhill-oriented touring ski boot. From winter 2018/19, there will be a men's and a women's model of the Hoji Pro Tour.

At 1450 grams, it weighs more like an ascent-oriented touring boot, but should leave nothing to be desired on the descent, i.e. be quite stiff and enable direct power transmission. The heart of the ski boot (patent pending) is the sophisticated Hoji Lock closure system. It enables 55° shaft rotation on the ascent and full downhill power by flipping the rear lever.

The shortened boot toe and the recessed rotation point of the inserts for an ergonomic walking movement and compatibility with the ultra-light Cramp-In crampons (260 grams!) make the Hoji Pro Tour an all-rounder.

We have been using our test model for three weeks and will report back soon.

Mammut - Bright orange for all safety products

Following the further development of avalanche airbag backpacks and the Barryvox avalanche transceiver in recent years, all safety-relevant parts of shovels and probes are now also available in bright orange. Experience has shown that this helps the user to maintain an overview even in stressful situations and save valuable seconds in the event of an emergency. Tests have shown that clearly divided color changes on the probe make it easier to identify the snow depth indicators. The new color concept will be used in the upcoming 2018/19 winter season for the Alugator Pro Light shovel, which has a small pack size and weighs just 650 grams despite its large 27.5 x 24 cm shovel blade. Thanks to sharpened edges and integrated footrests, it should be possible to dig quickly and effectively even in hard snow. Combined with the new, color-matched Carbon Probe 280 (gram!) Fast Lock, the safety compartment of the freeride backpack is perfectly equipped.

Scott SuperGuide - almost a ski classic

This ski has already been used on many large steep faces and successfully completed challenging alpine undertakings. It can therefore be said that the ski has proven itself. Nevertheless, Scott has not slept and rested on its laurels. The ski is available in widths of 105, 95 and 88 mm and as a women's ski with 88 mm. The existing highlights such as lightness on the ascent, agility, stability and playfulness on the descent have been further improved. Nevertheless, the ski is still not just something for the really wild ones, no, it also skis wonderfully on the piste and enjoys itself in playful freeride terrain.

SLF - Innovations at White Risk

Our new main CR partner SLF has been producing the White Risk planning and learning tool for several years. White Risk is now also available as an app. It can be used to access all relevant information on the current avalanche situation, topo maps for tour planning and interesting facts about avalanche danger.

For the 2018/19 season, there will be a new map concept for downloading the corresponding map sectors in the app. This will make it easier to plan, adapt and share tours. In future, the maps will also show different aspects of the avalanche terrain. There are also plans to make an extended PRO version available. We are excited about the new features and will test them extensively in the near future and report accordingly.
