Gear reviews | Scott Symbol 2 Plus D helmet

Satisfied all round

by Christian Skala 02/26/2018
With the Symbol 2 Plus D, Scott is launching an award-winning helmet on the market which, according to the manufacturer, is designed to provide a whole new level of safety when skiing thanks to the D3O® inserts and MIPS® integration: The helmet is said to provide special protection against impacts at low, medium and high speeds.

Testers and test conditions

I have been testing the Scott Symbol 2 Plus D ski helmet for more than 30 days of skiing this season. So far, the helmet has been in use in temperatures ranging from around -15°C to slightly above zero and when touring and freeriding, on deep powder days, but also in rain and wet snow. I wear the helmet in size M and in the color radiant red. I previously wore helmets from Sweet and Uvex.

Test report

The Scott Symbol 2 Plus fits very comfortably thanks to the soft round padding and can be perfectly adjusted thanks to the MRAS2 Fit System, which not only has a wheel for tightening and widening the helmet, but also allows the height of the adjustment strap to be changed. The padding on the chin strap, which can be easily fastened with a buckle, is also very comfortable. Even in icy temperatures, the buckle can be easily closed and opened.

The goggles can be quickly and easily attached to the rear part of the helmet with a rubber strap system for hooking in. Both with Marker and Uvex goggles, the helmet fits perfectly and without pressure points in the forehead area during the test period.

The manufacturer doesn't advertise the 360° Pure Sound technology for nothing: "Compared to other helmets, I can hear very well with the Scott Symbol 2 Plus without my fellow riders having to shout. This helps with communication, especially off-road. I was also able to hear ambient noises quickly and very well.

I found the helmet's ventilation system very pleasant, especially on warmer days. There are always open ventilation slots on the sides of the helmet, which allow optimum air circulation: warm air can escape to the outside so that the goggles really don't fog up, but cold air stays outside. An additional ventilation slot can be activated on the top. There are two sliders for this, each of which opens part of the ventilation slot so that it can be partially or fully opened for ventilation. This allowed me to react optimally to the ambient temperature and the weather with the ventilation. The helmet has an ear cover, which is fixed in place with a plug-in system. A gentle tug is enough to remove the cover. However, I never used this function during use.

From the outset, the Scott Symbol 2 Plus made a very robust and well-made impression on me. Even after more than 30 days of use, the helmet still shows no signs of wear or weaknesses in workmanship. With a weight of 577 g (measured by myself), the Scott Symbol 2 Plus is comfortable to wear and wasn't a nuisance to lug around on any ski tour. Should the Scott Symbol 2 Plus ever need odour neutralization, the parts of the inner lining can be easily removed and cleaned (but not in the washing machine!). The helmet is not bulky on the head and therefore has a visually convincing fit.

Conclusion

A helmet that has been a loyal companion this season and will continue to be so in the future. In any case, I am completely satisfied. Fortunately, I wasn't able to test the safety features, but I trust the information provided by the manufacturer.
