Sturdy Goretex hardshell for activities in bad weather

The Soulquest BC GTX 3L Jacket is the top model from the Salomon jacket collection and should of course meet the highest demands for weather protection and robustness. In addition, the "Motion-Fit" cut with additional gussets should allow perfect freedom of movement. The jacket has now been able to show us what it can do in an endurance test...

First impression

The Soulquest jacket from Salomon is a hardshell jacket of the more solid kind, which also weighs a bit. I tested the jacket in size Large, the men's version. At just over 180 cm tall, the jacket is long enough at all ends and cut rather wide (wide in the sense of not tight, not wide in the sense of baggy). This is the so-called "Motion Fit" cut, which is designed to offer a lot of freedom of movement, especially for "big lines" and "technical descents", according to the manufacturer's description.

The jacket has two normal, spacious zipped pockets, one of which has a glasses cleaning cloth sewn into it. An inner mesh pocket is designed for storing ski goggles, but is also suitable for handkerchiefs or jelly babies. There is a second, smaller inner pocket with a zipper and an exit for a headphone cable, as well as a ski pass pocket on the outside of the left sleeve and two ventilation zippers on the armpits/underarms. The snow skirt can be fastened with press studs and can be removed (zipper). The cuffs are sewn in with "thumb-through" cuffs. They are made of elastic material and fit quite snugly around the hand. According to the manufacturer, the jacket therefore has "professional features, professional materials and a professional fit". So nothing should stand in the way of a professional Soulquest trip.

Practical test

I have now used the jacket for a good 30 days, from multi-day ski tours to cycling to work in the rain. It is still perfectly waterproof and shows no signs of wear. The jacket really comes into its own when the weather tends to be unpleasant (storms, snow, rain). The hood is easy to adjust and large enough to wear over a helmet without any problems. Thanks to the extended neck area with Motion Fit, you can still move your head unusually well even with a hood and helmet (with many other jackets, I feel rather concreted into the jacket with this setup). The sleeves are nice and long and can be adjusted at the cuffs as required thanks to Velcro fasteners. Here too, freedom of movement is maintained, no matter how you tighten all the Velcro fasteners and elasticated cuffs due to bad weather.

I initially found the cuffs with the thumb loops took a bit of getting used to, as I occasionally put my gloves on before the jacket and then get caught in them. If you want to stuff the gloves into the sleeves, this feature makes the process slightly more difficult. Thicker insulating layers (e.g. Primaloft jackets) fit well under the Soulquest jacket, but they are quickly pushed up towards the waist when the Soulquest's snow skirt is closed. As the jacket is relatively long anyway, I haven't had any snow in my pants even with the snow skirt open.

Conclusion

The motion-fit cut delivers what it promises. Even in bad weather, with a helmet on and with a maximum of insulation, you can move freely. Otherwise, a solid, versatile hardshell jacket not just for skiing!
