Gear reviews | Flylow Foxy Bib

My favorite pants

by Deike Puttnins 02/16/2018
"Dungarees would be something" - I've often thought that to myself. Nice and warm at the back, no annoying slipping or snow getting in and they look casual too. Unfortunately, there isn't enough choice from the various manufacturers of bibs, or they sell out quickly. But this winter I was lucky and was given the FLYLOW Foxy Bib to test.

Tester and test conditions

I am 177 cm tall and weigh 64 kg. My standard clothing size is 38, although 38 is often too short for me when it comes to pants. I wear the Flylow Foxy Bib in 38 and it fits perfectly all round, including the length. I've been able to test them since Christmas 2017 (2-3 times a week) and I haven't stopped wearing them for a long time yet. In the meantime, I've been through all the good and bad snow, weather and rock conditions with the Bib and it's time for a detailed test report.

First impression

When I opened my package, the excitement was great. Do the pants fit? Do I like them? Is the color good? And is a bib practical at all?

To be honest, at first I thought the color was okay and inconspicuous and the pants weren't particularly special. When I tried them on, I was relieved - they fit perfectly! And the many pockets and ventilation zippers were exactly what I was looking for in freeride pants. So much for my "first impression" - everything was fine and I was quite happy with the new pants. However, I didn't think they were a real hit yet.

As I didn't have a jacket in my wardrobe that even came close to matching the color, I continued to wear my Flylow Nina pants from last season. I had fallen in love with them and didn't really want to swap them. But who doesn't like to have a change of pants in their wardrobe? Just in time for Christmas, I received the matching Billie Coat jacket from Flylow to go with my Bib. It looks very cool together and not too stylish.

Test report

The first use of the trousers was to take place on a leisurely girls' coffee tour. We met at my house and started planning the tour over coffee and croissants. Of course, I was already ready to go and almost fully dressed when I opened the front door. "Wow! What awesome pants you're wearing." That was the first comment, even before she hugged me and wished me a good morning. The second lady also asked what kind of pants they were and if she could try them on for a moment before she had her coffee. She had been looking for trousers like these for a long time. As she tends to be a size 38/40, the bib was a little tighter around her hips and stomach and she would need a size bigger than I was wearing.

So much for the look of the Foxy Bib. I now hear these comments more often and I'm always happy when someone else thinks my pants look as good as I do. Despite, or perhaps because the trousers are relatively plain, I really like their color, cut and fit. Yes, a real favorite pair of pants that you can also wear before and after skiing.

The pants not only look mega cool, but are also extremely comfortable to wear thanks to the stretchy material. The bib is cut high and wide and is practically attached. They have a long zipper on the left side. This zipper goes up to rib height so that the back part of the pants can simply be folded away. Fortunately, this eliminates the need to take off your jacket and pull the bib down completely when you want to relieve yourself on a tour. There is a press stud to prevent the fastener from simply opening when moving. Of course, you can also use the double-sided clippers above the bib on the front to put on and take off the bib.

Both the inside and outside of the legs have ventilation zips that can be opened on both sides. When it gets warmer on the hike up, there is sufficient ventilation.

There is a breast pocket in the bib. This is where I keep my snack for in-between meals and always have it to hand. The back pocket on the left-hand side has remained empty for me so far, although I wouldn't rule out the possibility of it being put to good use at some point. Better one pocket too many than too few. I use the relatively large pockets on my thighs to store maps and handkerchiefs. That way, both are always to hand. On the right and left of the bib there are side openings into a large pocket. This also usually remains empty for me - but it is extremely convenient to put your hands in there when après-skiing, for example (if you don't have a drink in your hand).

To prevent snow from getting in, a rubber snow guard is sewn into the legs and the bib can be attached to a matching jacket at hip height using press studs. All zippers have extra-long zipper tapes. This looked a bit strange to me at first glance, but it turns out to be incredibly practical and makes it much easier to use. Especially if you want to open the pockets with gloves on.

The material is warm and breathable. It is slightly thinner at the back over the seat and even more stretchy. This offers more freedom of movement and prevents excessive sweating. All the seams are superbly finished and so far the material looks very robust. Machine washing with the right detergent works great and so far it hasn't left any marks on the trousers.

Conclusion

The Flylow Foxy Bib wasn't necessarily love at first sight, but I have to admit that love at second sight is all the greater. For me, everything about the dungarees is just right. Color, cut, fit and use. The material warms perfectly and I choose the bib both at -20 degrees and +10 degrees. In winter it's nice and warm with dungarees anyway, and in spring you don't need a vest when you're climbing peaks in the sunshine without a jacket. So far, neither washing nor climbing over snow and rock ridges or ski edges have left any signs of wear on the trousers.

These are my absolute favorite pants and I highly recommend them in combination with the Billie Coat from Flylow.
