Gear reviews | Flylow Daphne Jacket

Warm and comfortable women's jacket with high weather protection

For this winter, I particularly wanted a jacket for the really cold season. In recent years, I've become increasingly sensitive to the cold and didn't want to freeze either on the slopes or in the lift. I also didn't want to keep pulling on my jacket and trousers so that nothing slipped and everything was windproof.

Tester and test conditions

I am approx. 177 cm tall and weigh 64 kg. I combine the jacket with the Flylow Nina Pant (Gear of the Week), both fit me perfectly in size M. Up to now I've been wearing a hard shell jacket and have put on a thin down jacket underneath for insulation. I've been wearing the jacket since the beginning of the season in very cold temperatures right through to spring. For skiing, freeriding, shopping and ski touring. The jacket has been worn a lot and tested in almost all conditions.

First impression

The Daphne Jacket from Flylow is not a pure hardshell, but a wind and weatherproof jacket, which is lightly insulated with 80g Primaloft Eco to withstand sub-zero temperatures. When I held the jacket in my hands for the first time, I was surprised by the very light weight of the jacket - or rather the coat.

Of course, the jacket is equipped with all the usual features. For example, it has a helmet-compatible hood that can be adjusted with an elastic band, wrist warmers and Velcro-adjustable cuffs. The snow guard is detachable and the jacket hem can be adjusted with an elasticated drawstring. The jacket also has a variety of pockets, namely a pocket for the ski pass on the left sleeve, two large zippered chest pockets, two large zippered side pockets, an open mesh inner pocket and an inner i-Pod/mobile phone pocket with zipper and hole for headphone cable.

When I put it on, I felt practically nothing on my shoulders, this jacket is really super light. Is it really warm enough? It does make a rather thin impression...

Test report

When the temperatures dropped to -22 degrees in January, the jacket kept me warm, contrary to expectations. Nevertheless, I don't start sweating on other winter days like I would in a thick down jacket. The Primaloft material is suitable for all winter temperatures. I only get too warm in spring when the temperature is above freezing and I swap the Daphne Jacket for a thinner jacket.

The thing I like best is the length of the jacket: snow can't get in and no breeze can make its way inside towards my body. If desired, the jacket can be attached to the pants. In my opinion, however, this wasn't necessary as the jacket is cut nice and long anyway and the snow skirt also holds up superbly.

The generous zippers for ventilation under the arms provide the necessary ventilation on ascents. I was able to wear the jacket on several tours.

The cut is casual and offers me sufficient freedom of movement. It may not be figure-hugging enough for some women, but I personally think Flylow has a great combination of style, fit and function for this area of use. I like it so much that I even enjoy wearing it in my free time.

Conclusion

The Flylow Daphne is a perfect winter jacket for deep snow and the really cold season. As soon as the pure freeride season ends and the tours start, I would prefer a thinner, more functional jacket again. It's light but still very warm, it's not bulky and it looks great. There's no need to wear a thin down jacket. I don't find it compact enough to attach to or in a backpack for climbing. The ventilation slits under the arms help to break a sweat on short ascents, but for me it's still mainly suitable for descents.
