Gear Review | Devold of Norway - Wool Mesh Man half zip neck and ¾ long johns

The new merino mesh from Devold in the test

Wool mesh man half zip neck
Devold advertises the Merino Wool Mesh Man underwear combination as an all-rounder: it promises good moisture transport, low weight, high breathability and quick drying paired with odour inhibition. 100% merino wool should also ensure optimum heat regulation.

First impression

When unpacking, I was initially surprised by the unusual merino wool mesh design (it looks a bit like erotic underwear). This certainly saves weight and you could already imagine on first contact that this construction allows both good ventilation and optimum moisture transport. The material feels soft and looks high-quality: the flat seams make a robust impression and both the top and bottom look well-made. The top has a half-high collar, which also protects the neck from the cold. A zip from the collar to the chest can be opened from both the top and the bottom. The zip is covered with extra fabric on the inside so that it does not scratch the skin. There are sufficiently wide cuffs at the sleeve ends for better protection against the cold. Ideally, the top is cut slightly longer at the back so that the back is well covered. The trousers are cut three-quarter length. Both the top and bottom had a normal cut on me - neither skin-tight nor ultra-wide. I wore the combination in size M with my height of 1.75 m and weight of 70 kg.

The practical test

So far I've used the Devold Wool Mesh Men underwear combination for about 20 days of skiing, most of them on ski tours, but also a few days in the area. I usually wore a fleece directly over my underwear. In snowfall, I wore a hardshell directly over my underwear on the ascent. Most of the time this winter I was travelling in inversion weather conditions, i.e. at the start of the ascent it was often double-digit temperatures below zero and in the summit area it was closer to 0°C. Some days we also had bad weather with precipitation.

I generally tend to sweat quite quickly. I can safely say that the Devold Wool Mesh underwear provides very convincing moisture transport. It got significantly less damp than other underwear combinations I've worn, especially in the back and shoulder area where the backpack rests. This was particularly evident on the days when I wore the hardshell over my underwear. Even in the very cold temperatures at the beginning of the tours, I never froze - so despite the mesh construction, the heat retention also seems to work. Even though the manufacturer advertises an ultra-light weight, I didn't particularly notice this. The material felt very comfortable against the skin and was flexible and mouldable during all movements. The cuffs on the top and trousers are not too tight, even during practical use, but close comfortably. I like the zip on the top: when it got warmer, I opened it more often to optimise ventilation, but never from below. Personally, I don't think you really need the zip opening "from the bottom". I think the 3/4 length of the trousers is ideal. Personally, I generally only wear 3/ 4-length trousers so that there are no overlaps and therefore no friction points between the pants and ski socks in the ski boot.

The Devold Wool-Mesh Man functional underwear has virtually no odour, even after several days of touring. After wearing, the underwear always dried very quickly at room temperature so that it was quickly ready for use again.

Conclusion

The Devold-Wool Mesh Merino functional underwear convinced me. It does what the manufacturer promises: good heat retention, optimum moisture transport and quick drying. It is comfortable to wear and the after-touring aroma is pleasantly limited. A good companion for winter use in all winter sports and weather conditions.

Advantages and disadvantages

+ is comfortable to wear

+ low odour

+ good moisture transport

+ quick drying

- Not quite good value for money
