Gear of the Week | Mammut Aconcagua ML Jacket

Warm and stretchy fleece midlayer

Aconcagua fleece jackets from Mammut have been around for a really long time. At least I imagine I owned one about 15 years ago. Of course, the models change over time and there is currently a whole range of Aconcagua jackets and trousers. What they all have in common is the high-quality Polartec® Power Stretch material and their existence as a mid-layer.

And of course, you (almost) always need a midlayer, as winter sports tend to be cooler. This is where the advantages of the high-quality (and expensive) material become apparent. Although not too thick, the Aconcagua jacket is really warm, relatively breathable and thanks to its stretch properties it fits close to the body. All in all it is very comfortable to wear.

I have recently been able to call an Aconcagua ML in bright red my own and use this versatile fleece jacket for various activities, such as skiing, touring, walking around or even running. The smooth outer surface is quite robust, but practically does not keep out the wind - a classic mid-layer. The Aconcagua is certainly on the warmer side for fleece jackets. I have partially dispensed with an additional layer - on colder days I normally wear a thin down jacket or vest - as the Aconcagua keeps me warm enough.

The pockets are set very high so that they can also be used with a backpack or climbing harness. Otherwise, the jacket has the usual features such as an elasticated waistband, thumb loops on the sleeves and a high-quality, smooth-running zip.

Actually, that's all I can say about the Aconcagua ML Jacket. It works and is very comfortable to wear, in the snow and on the rocks as well as at home on the couch. Merino may be more fashionable than synthetic fibres these days, but I personally prefer the higher breathability and faster drying of synthetic fibres.

In addition to the version presented here, the jacket is also available as a hoody and in a less warm version made from thinner material as the Aconcagua Light ML Jacket. Of course, the fleece jacket is also available in several colours. The bright red of my version is understandably not everyone's cup of tea.
