Gear of the week | Haglöfs Vassi GTX Touring Combo

Lightweight touring suit!

by Steffen Kruse 02/13/2022
When I unpacked the suit, it was already crackling. Not just inside me with anticipation, but even more so the material of the combo. The sound reminded me of craft paper from the past and spinnaker cloth from sailing.

However, apart from the crackling, this combination has nothing to do with craft paper. The situation is different with spinnaker cloth - a spinnaker is made of extremely thin cloth, but must also be super stable. The Vassi Combo also fulfils these characteristics. Even the odd shrub/branch contact does not upset.

Haglöfs describes the Vassi Outfit not only as a touring suit, but also as a freeride suit. Personally, I don't usually use it for freeriding, I bought it as a ski touring suit. For me, a pure freeride suit has to be a little wider cut rather than "alpine". For me, the Vassi Combo fully fulfils all the touring characteristics, from head to toe, from the good jacket ventilation to the rather alpine, tight leg cuffs (good for crampon use).

Before we get to the practical report, a few words about the test conditions and myself. I am 186 cm tall and weigh around 85 kg - a classic L-carrier, as is the case with these trousers. The trouser legs are nice and long and the trousers fit well at the waist. The jacket is not too tight and an insulating layer fits well underneath. The suit has been tested in all kinds of conditions so far. In heavy snowfall and powder for freeriding, but also on the piste and on ski tours in bluebird conditions, up to around 1,500 metres ascent.

The trouser legs have edge protection at the ends and, as already described, have an alpine cut. The trousers fit rather snugly around the ski boot. There are two spacious pockets on the thighs that can hold lots of small items (maps, bars, etc.). The ventilation zips are located on the right and left of the outer leg and extend from the hip to the knee. The waistband can be individually adjusted using two Velcro fasteners. The trousers are fastened with two press studs. There is a hanging loop at the back of the trousers. I think the design of the trousers is very purist, but they still have everything you need. For freeride trousers, I miss the back pocket for my wallet, but that's certainly not the main target group.

The jacket is also really well thought out. Even on the first tour, I noticed the two super ventilation zips on the chest. These are also easy to use while running and without taking off the backpack . In general, all zips are sealed, but can still be operated easily with one hand and gloves. The jacket does not have a snow skirt or a ski pass pocket on the sleeve. In my opinion, these features are absolutely unnecessary for a touring suit. The jacket waistband can be adjusted with an elasticated band. The helmet-compatible hood can be fastened with a press stud and therefore doesn't get in the way when not in use. The width of the cuffs can be adjusted with Velcro fasteners.

Both the trousers and jacket are made from GORE-TEX Active, which is super light, breathable and yet very hard-wearing. You can find more information about the membrane here.

Haglöfs has long been committed to the environment and the best possible sustainability of its production and supports various other environmental projects

Conclusion

A super well thought-out and functional touring suit with all the features you need. I personally think the different colour combinations are really great. For me, this item of clothing will certainly be part of my everyday life in spring!
