Gear reviews | Penguin Pinneco Jacket

Insulation jacket with plenty of stretch

by Volker Lehmann 03/06/2017
The small Swiss clothing brand PENGUIN is breaking new ground in the development of its insulation jackets. With the innovative and functional SuperStrech material from Pinneco and the clear and simple design - as you would expect from Penguin - the jacket is the ideal companion on cold days.

First impression

The first feel of the fabric when unpacking was pleasant. The workmanship is good and this impression is confirmed when you put it on and try it on for the first time. The design and fit are pleasing and the jacket can be worn as a mid-layer or outer jacket. The jacket in size M fits comfortably at 176 cm and 75 kg. It doesn't have a super sporty cut, but it's not bulky either - so you can easily wear one or two layers underneath - and it's neither too short nor too long - it just fits.

The material

PENGUIN uses Pinneco Mantle Super Stretch™ from the Chinese company Pinneco as an insulating layer. This material is made from 100% recycled polyester fibers and has been specially developed for active sports. The SuperStrech material has excellent durability values and is evenly stretchable in every direction without permanent deformation. This means that the material should always return to its original state under high loads. The jacket also has excellent thermal properties.

Practical use

Since the beginning of the year, the jacket has actually been in use every day - whether on tour, in the ski area or on the way to work.

The reason why I wanted an insulating fiber jacket was that until now I always had a down jacket with me on tours, which was slowly but surely showing signs of fatigue. And in this area of use, the jacket has so far shown no weaknesses. On the ascent, I stuff it into the integrated outer side pocket, which serves as a practical pack sack. It is therefore well compressed, can be easily stowed in the backpack and serves as an ideal source of warmth when resting on the summit and on the descent. It is also ideal for use as a pillow in huts or when camping. The wind protection is good and the heat output has been completely sufficient in all temperatures so far.

As I mentioned in my first impression, the jacket feels very comfortable - even when worn with a shirt next to the skin. The fit is absolutely fine for me. I find that many jackets in this range are cut too short - which often put me off buying one. The Pinneco jacket is long enough and can be pulled together with an elasticated waistband. Only the hood is cut quite large and cannot be adjusted with an elastic band. This means that it can be worn with a helmet, but is almost useless in windy conditions as there is no way of fastening it.

I also often wear the jacket as an insulating layer on colder days in the ski resort. Often directly over the first layer. Here, too, the jacket has convinced me - or rather, I haven't noticed the jacket - which is one of the best statements for a piece of clothing.

The initial concerns that the jacket would quickly start to smell when sweating lightly have not been confirmed - even after more than 30 days in use, the jacket does not smell and so far there has been no reason to wash it. It is also relatively insensitive to dirt and small stains can be washed off quickly and easily.

Since Penguin tends to work with subtle colors, I also wear the jacket every day on my way to work. It also meets my requirements here. It keeps out the wind, keeps you nice and warm at all times, can withstand a small rain shower and also looks casual.

The jacket is lightweight and weighs 410 grams (size M). The two side pockets and a practical inside pocket fulfill their function. It is not super compressible - but absolutely sufficient for the uses for which it is intended. The YKK zippers work perfectly and the overall finish looks great. So far, it hasn't shown any signs of wear, even though it has been used every day, albeit not always in rough conditions on the mountain.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a practical insulating layer for everyday use, you will be absolutely satisfied with the Penguin Pinneco jacket. For me, it is an ideal companion on tours that meets my requirements and expectations.
