TouringTip | From Piz Corvatsch to Pontresina

Pleasure tour with magnificent views towards Piz Bernina

by Johannes Wolf 02/23/2020
Most freeriders will be familiar with Corvatsch, as the Engadinsnow Freeride Contest, a stop on the Freeride World Qualifier Tour, has been held here for several years. In addition to numerous steep descents on the north and west sides, there are also much easier tours with descents of more than 1000m. One of these is the descent towards Pontresina, whose north/east slopes offer enjoyable turns.

Ascent

Take section B of the Murtèl - Corvatsch cable car to the summit station at 3303m. The actual tour starts from there. After a few meters on the piste, you leave it at the first east-west bend and head over the ridge towards Vadret da l'Alp Ota. If you still want to reach the actual summit of Piz Corvatsch, you can climb up to Piz Corvatsch from here via Piz Murtèl, but this is not absolutely necessary for this tour and you can usually save yourself the few meters in altitude at this point. Depending on the snow conditions, you can make it over the pass with a little pushing. Before you reach the glacier, it does become alpine for a short time. You reach the actual start via a narrow ledge directly on the rock face. However, this somewhat tricky section is secured with a rope to defuse the situation.

Descent

Once you have conquered this section, a 1000-metre descent awaits you. For the first 300m, head north/east over the rest of the Vadret da l'Alp Ota glacier and then head north again. A view to the east is definitely worthwhile here, as you can see the really impressive glacier moraine of the Vadret da Tschierva below the west side of the Piz Bernina.

Here it gets steeper again for a short time before you reach the small Margun Surovel mountain pasture below the Fuorcla Surley. From here, the route continues north/east towards Roseg. It is important not to descent into the valley too early, as there is a nature conservation zone here that is not allowed to be skied. Shortly before Roseg, a small forest track leads down to the hotel.

From Hotel Roseg, take the winter hiking trail to Pontresina railroad station. Here you will need to be strong once again, as Pontresina is about 7 km away. Although the winter hiking trail is slightly downhill, you should not underestimate the distance and take this into account when planning your time. The last 200 meters to the train station are on foot. The bus or train will take you back to St. Moritz.
