Gear of the week | Smartwool Smartloft vest

Even half-measures have their raison d'être

by Steffen Kruse 03/10/2024
I can no longer imagine my portfolio without it and, despite the missing sleeves, I highly recommend it.

Opinions will probably differ on this Gear of the Week. Some people don't see the point of a vest and prefer to take a proper midlayer with them, especially on multi-day tours. I can understand this opinion, but I disagree. I like to wear a vest over my base layer on ski tours in the current temperatures, for example. It warms the chest area and protects against the wind, but also offers good ventilation thanks to the lack of sleeves.

I've owned the Smartwool Smartloft vest since the beginning of winter, so it's probably been in use for over 40 days, in the house, at work, chilling out, ski touring, cooking, pretty much every activity except going to the sauna at home😉. I am 186 cm tall, weigh 85 kg and wear the vest in size L.

In addition to its current winter use, I'm already looking forward to using the vest in summer for hiking, climbing and other outdoor activities. It is a replacement for my old merino vest from another brand, two of which I have "used up" in the last four years. Worn out means that the shoulders and back area have become quite airy/loose over time due to wear and tear. This is why I came across the Smartwool vest, as the outer coating is made of 100 % robust nylon. This makes it more hardwearing, especially in the shoulder area if you often carry a backpack. The stretchy blended fabric on the sides allows good ventilation and freedom of movement. The merino wool synthetic fibre lining provides additional functionality and durability, and part of the vest is made from 50 % recycled and reprocessed wool. The insulation not only provides good heat management, but in my opinion also offers effective sweat management. In any case, nobody has complained to me yet and the jacket has not yet been washed ... 😊.

With two hand pockets and a chest pocket, all with zips, it has enough storage space for your essentials. With a weight of around 300 grams and a regular fit, the vest is ideal for all outdoor adventures. I don't currently see any wear or weak points, but the long-term test has not yet been completed and the winter season is still long.

Saving the best for last, the vest is currently on sale, take a look here!
