Human Factor: No Human, no avalanche accident Over 90% of all avalanche victims have triggered their own avalanche. And astonishingly there are often experienced mountain guides and freeriders amongst these victims. In this article I want to analyse the processes that often lead to making the wrong decision against better knowledge. An avalanche science that excludes us humans with our complex psyche in the process of decision making doesnt work. This is about the self-deception-trap from which even the most intelligent athletes arent safe. On the contrary. > Alpine Dangers The mountains can be incredibly beautiful, especially when they are covered with a thick layer of powder. The temptation of a powder covered slope is almost irresistible for freeriders. It makes you want to forget about everything else and just ride as much as you can. We all know this feeling.
But there is a thin line between pleasure and pain, especially in the mountains. This is an introduction to the dangers that are always luring in the mountains, even on the most beautiful powder day > Risk Check 3x3 Filter Method, Reduction Method, avalanche bulletin ... sure, that sounds pretty dry and scientific. And you dont want to study, you want powder. But just like no one would jump head first into ankle deep water you should always be aware of the potential dangers in freeriding. The good news is that simple methods are now available that can help reduce the risk of freeriding dramatically. In the risk check chapter you will find an introduction to the most important methods for risk management. These methods are explained in detail (certainly easier to understand) in our Powderguide handbook and in Werner Munters 3x3 Lawinen (currently not available in English). Both books are highly recommended and listed in our books section!
