Huge amounts of snow have arrived in Chamonix, with around 80cm falling during the last three days, and some areas seeing anywhere up to 120cm. Strong winds have kept many of the lifts closed, especially at altitude, but there was more than enough snow in the trees for everyone.

First of all, apologies for the lack of updates from Chamonix. I'm afraid for me February is, like many others in the Alps, a time to work, and I'm spending precious little time outside. I do so desperately hope that March will see a litle more in the way of skiing.
As a result, I'm afraid what little information I can provide here today is mostly second hand, heresay, conjecture, or sheer fabrication.

A few worthy storms over a week ago gave us a good top up of snow, but strong winds from almost every direction followed by a spike in temperatures have left the snowpack difficult to read, and large patches of sun crust, wind slab, and general unpleasantness everywhere. However, there has been a lot of good skiing to be found on higher north-facing aspects, and early-spring skiing on south-facing aspects. Furthermore, many people consider the current conditions simply not worth bothering with, so the mountains aren't especially crowded at the moment, despite it being the busy period of the school holidays. This means that you can still find good snow a fairly long time after snowfall on what are traditionally very busy routes.

Over the last two weeks Chamonix has seen rapid changes. Significant snowfall down to valley level (finally!) was followed by a short period of relative calm, but favourable conditions across the board were suddenly destroyed by lift-closing gale-force winds, the dreaded warm southerlies of the foehn, followed by a quick session of cold northern bise, before a return to the foehn. The second coming of the foehn wind brought with it a few days of rain up to nearly 2000 metres and another few hundred metres of heavy wet snow above that, but the high mountains received what many people have been waiting for, a nice thick layer of slightly-warm, moist snow, to stick to the steep faces, cover the rocks, and fill in some of the holes. It's been a long time coming, but with more weather predicted and a cold snap on the way, it looks as though winter is finally ready to start in the Chamonix valley.

After nearly seven weeks of waiting, Chamonix was finally given the blizzard we were all hankering after, and for a couple of days it felt like winter. But then the winds picked up, and our precious, yearned-for 50cm or so of fresh snow got shifted around by gale-force winds, and with most of the big lifts in the valley closed, all we could do is watch as it got turned into an endless sea of wind slab.

A great deal of snow has finally landed on Chamonix, even right down to the valley floor, and there is much more promised during the week to come.

The Aosta Valley is an incredibly busy place to ski at the moment, purely because most of France pours through the Mont Blanc tunnel every day to make use of the snow Italy received halfway through this six-week drought. The tunnel queues are long, but worth it, especially if you drive a little further away from the honey pots of Courmayeur, La Thuile, and Pila. Today, we went touring up Valsavarenche, up the Grand Paradiso.

I've been trying to put a brave face on it, and I've been doing my best to make the most out of the poor conditions we've been given. But I can't distort the reality a moment longer: Chamonix is really, really bad right now.

It still hasn't snowed. We are now about five weeks from the last storm. Some people are wondering if it will ever snow again.
However, there is still some great snow around... but if you want to ski the good stuff, you have to be creative in your route choice, and enthusiastic enough to go and find it. And if that doesn't work out, you can always go mountain biking, as they are now letting bikes on the lifts again.

Chamonix was blessed by, frankly, a ridiculous amount of snow back in early November followed by a couple of top-up storms, and then, for the last month, absolutely nothing. The smog hangs heavy in the air under an obstinate blanket of high pressure, and the snowline, which started with nearly 120cm of snow down in the valley at 1000m of altitude, has been pushed higher and higher by endless days of blue sky and weak December sun. There is no snow below 2000m of altitude on south-facing slopes, and nothing below 1700m north-facing. The moraines and access paths on the Glacier du Tour, the lower end of the Argentiere Glacier, and the Montenvers end of the Mer du Glace, are dry and crumbling.

With this in mind, if you want to ski any good snow in Chamonix at the moment, you need to aim high, look for sheltered spots, and if at all possible, go to Italy instead.
